Danvers Explosion
SMART RESPONDS

STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS ANIMAL RESPONSE TEAM (SMART) LENDS A HELPING HAND
SMART Team Leadership reached out to the Danvers Animal Control to lend support and offer assistance
following the explosion.
The residents of the New England Home for the Deaf had to evacuate as a result of the explosion in Danvers
and when they did, some pets were left behind. The Executive Director for the New England Home for the Deaf
requested assistance and SMART was there to respond. The Animal Control Officer Team Leader for SMART
reached out to the SMART Partner Organizations, while the SMART Team Leader reported to the Danvers High
School and coordinated activities with the Danvers Animal Control Officer and the Executive Director of the New
England Home for the Deaf.
The end result was that four cats and two beta fish were rescued from the New England Home for the Deaf. The
two beta fish were taken to a local animal hospital while the four cats will remain with Danvers Animal Control
and will be reunited with their families when the residents return to their home. Also, two large fish tanks
remained at the facility. The electricity is on and the Danvers Animal Control Officer has coordinated with the
New England Home for the Deaf on feeding arrangements.
Some homes had windows blown out following the explosion. Residents of missing pets were advised to
contact the Danvers Animal Control Officer at (978) 777-0825 and provide the following information: Owner's
name, contact information, pet's name, description of pet, address of home where pet lived.
Animal Control Officers from neighboring communities have been assisting Danvers Animal Control and no
further assistance from SMART is needed at this time. SMART Team Leaders will remain on call throughout the
weekend should their services be requested.
Massachusetts Task Force One Responds:
The Massachusetts Task Force 1 ( MATF-01) Urban Search and Rescue Team (US&R) is
located Beverly, Massachusetts. Urban Search and Rescue teams are composed of Police,
Fire, EMS and Civilians and have asearch and rescue dog component. The MATF-01 team
was called upon to search the houses in Danvers after the explosion. For more information on
